While he enjoyed tremendous success in all three formats, it is arguably in ODI cricket that he left his most significant mark. Across his 16-year career, the wicketkeeper averaged more than 50 in the 50-over format, becoming famed for his calm finishing style.

His first ODI came against Bangladesh, and India won by 11 runs, though Dhoni was run out for a duck off the first ball he faced. His last ODI was more successful personally, with the former captain making a half-century, but a bad one for the team. New Zealand won by 18 runs in the 2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final.
