On January 5 1971, Australia and England competed in the first official One-Day International, which was hastily arranged after the first three days of the scheduled Melbourne Test were washed out. The organisers were keen to cater for the cricket-hungry crowd and devised a one-off – at least they thought it would be – one-day match, that would proved to be a popular format played all around the globe.
